Originally named Emerald Desire, the team was established in 2019 by Amaya Thomas, an alumna of George Mason University. The Emeralds are a powerhouse dance ensemble within George Mason University’s Green Machine Ensembles, known for their precision, creativity, and unmatched energy. As the official dance team of the Green Machine Pep Band, the Emeralds embody Style, Agility, and Creativity—three pillars that define their dynamic approach to performance. Blending elements of jazz, hip-hop, and modern dance with the flair of traditional HBCU-inspired majorette style, the Emeralds bring a unique and electrifying presence to athletic events, campus showcases, and community performances. Under the direction of Coach Syla Foust, the team continues to evolve as both artists and scholars, representing the university with pride and professionalism.

Beyond the stage, the Emeralds promote a culture of discipline, unity, and academic success, ensuring that each member grows not only as a performer but as a leader within the Mason community. Their performances celebrate rhythm, heritage, and expression, captivating audiences through intricate choreography, high-energy visuals, and a deep connection to the music performed by the Green Machine ensembles.
